Hedingham Castle & Gardens - Essex

The best preserved Norman Castle in England. Where History Happens!

Hedingham Castle

The 900 year old Norman keep of Hedingham Castle stands in 160 acres of spectacularly beautiful landscaped gardens and woodland where the Lindsay family, descendants of the original owners, the De Veres, still live.

Hedingham Castle is not just one place. Romantic, beautiful, ancient, historic and wild, it is somewhere to set your imagination free. Privately owned, its character is unique, and its history is the heritage of us all.

Hedingham Castle

Classic landscaped beauty side by side with wild and rugged woodland make for wonderful walks with plenty of room for private picnics among the rhododendrons or in the shade of the trees by the lake.

Hedingham Castle

Beyond the Tudor bridge the Castle’s keep towers over the inner bailey, its massive, 110 feet high walls containing some of the finest Norman interiors in England. Five fascinating floors linked by a spiral staircase take you back in time to another age.

With wild areas of woodland and the staggering earthworks of the original defences, the gardens of Hedingham Castle are a constantly changing delight to the senses.

There’s a bog garden, mature trees and lawns running down to the lake; no matter what the time of year, there’s always something wonderful to see.

Our Events Programme can be found on the website, with full details of a scintillating season of stupendous shows! Jousting, Battles, Theatre, A Vintage Affair, Vintage Cars, and – to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta – we’re putting on a special event celebrating Hedingham’s unique connection with that momentous landmark in British history. Not to be missed!

The Castle and Gardens are open to the public from April to October.
